01 — What the work is about

My work explores the contradictions of being human —what we believe, what we observe, and the fragile ways we try to make sense of reality.

04 — The artist

MJ Alkhoory

M.J. Alkhoory is an Emirati visual artist based in Dubai. His work explores human nature, contradiction, belief, observation, and our attempts to understand reality. Through painting, he turns thoughts and questions into visual forms, often inviting viewers to look beyond the surface and reconsider what they see.

His practice is driven by curiosity and a fascination with the gap between what people believe, what they observe, and how they behave.

06 — For the curious ones

The Colonizer

Size
29.5 x 41 cm
Medium
Giclée print
Description
In "The Colonizer," violence and dominance are stripped bare. A black, legless ghost hovers above three struggling natives—part human, part crocodile—who recoil in anger and shock. One arm reaches toward them, while another stretches for a levitating diamond, its eye unblinking, symbolizing desire and obsession.

The Devouring Mother

Size
29.5 x 41 cm
Medium
Giclée print
Description
The canvas hums in shades of blue, layered with emotion and depth. Three curved stripes of yellow-green sweep from the top right to the bottom right — a pulse of life running diagonally across the calm. In the upper left, the Sun–Moon circle glows dark, holding only one flame, the faint spark of order surrounded by near-total chaos. The Moon curves into a crescent like those crowning Gulf mosques, enclosing a single flame that burns from within.

Bull at Dusk

Size
100 x 150 cm
Medium
Acrylic on canvas
Description
The bull stands between valleys at twilight, its horn encircling the moon itself. In "Bull at Dusk," the sky glows purple into red, a liminal space where day fades and night emerges.

Young and Happy

Size
20 x 30 cm
Medium
Oil on canvas
Description
A blue vase rests on a red surface, holding a plant made only of reaching stems — fluid, energetic, and unresolved. Warm yellows and oranges fill the background, creating a sense of openness and intensity.

As Solars Unbound

Size
80 x 120 cm
Medium
Acrylic on canvas
Date
November 20, 2026
Description
A red vase on an orange table holds more than flowers. Its roots stretch into hidden eyes, feeding off vision itself. From it grows a bird’s head with a sun for a face and an elephant’s head with a moon for a face. They turn away from each other, locked in disunity, and their child—a green bird—has fallen lifeless below.

Portrait of P

Size
60 x 90 cm
Medium
Acrylic on canvas
Description
Gluttony — not just of food, but of everything one believes will fill the emptiness. A black figure with red, ravenous eyes and a gaping smile drools with desire. His body, beneath the mouth, turns into a star-speckled void — space itself, insatiable and endless.
